| Let Go and Let God! - 7/30/2009 |
One week and counting... that's basically the timeframe until the last of the Broadwater offspring leaves the nest! And Dad is trying to deal with it! Cayla will be leaving for UCONN on August 8th where she'll attend on a full athletic scholarship for volleyball. So, obviously her mom and me are very proud of her for her accomplishment. But at the same time, it will mark a defining moment as she leaves the world of Dad always being there to protect her to entering the world of "Oh God, I hop >> Read More |

| Going Green - 7/28/2009 |
Curt and I are beginning a new series this weekend called "Going Green." There's a lot of talk right now about cleaning up the planet and being better stewards of the good earth. I personally believe this is something that Kingdom of God people will be accountable for. Now I'm not talking about being a "tree hugger" or trading in your SUV necessarily, unless of course that's what you want to do, but I am saying we need to do what we can to "go green."
We're going to hit on some of th >> Read More |

| An Outsiders Perspective - 7/27/2009 |
I think one of the healthiest things that can happen for a leader of an organization is to get an outsider's perspective. Yesterday my wife and I, and two other couples on our leadership team, visited a one-year old church plant. The planter has been somewhat discouraged by their progress mainly because he has such high expectation of himself and the plant. So, I went to the Sunday service with a fairly low level of expectation. Man, was I pleasantly surprised!
First of all, the loc >> Read More |

| Networking and Good Ole Boys! - 7/24/2009 |
I have to confess that there is a significant part of me that's just a "good ole boy!" You know, the hunting and fishing type, with a truck, with some camo; well, you get the picture! And I've got me some good ole boy buddies, too! And, yes, we do the hunting and fishing and whitewater rafting and all that kind of adventure stuff. But there's also some guys in my "Good Ole Boys Network" that don't hunt and fish; because that's not what makes this network what it is...

| Family First - 7/22/2009 |
One of the things that I've probably done right and done well, is to put my family first when it comes to "ministry." I came to this conclusion early on when I was involved with a church that basically felt that because they paid me, they owned me and I needed to be available 24/7 for their every whim and want. Well all that changed one Sunday morning when I declared, "My family is my first place of ministry, not your family; your family is YOUR first place of ministry!" It was fueled with em >> Read More |

| Blessed are the Persecuted - 7/15/2009 |
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness" is what Jesus actually says when he brings the Beatitudes to a conclusion. Persecution is not something many of us aspire to. At the same time, persecution is something that is often misapropriated.
For example, can I say I'm truly being persecuted at work by my co-workers or boss, etc. when actually I'm always late for work or I'm not performing my job up to standard? No, that is not persecution; that is getting what I deserv >> Read More |

| "Vision" for Life - 7/13/2009 |
Proverbs 29:18, the often quoted verse on "vision" is also often misunderstood or misinterpreted simply because we don't take the time to truly get at the roots of what is being said. I've heard a lot of leaders, and I've been guilty of it myself, stating that "where there is not vision, people perish, means that you have to have a plan for your life or you're just wandering around aimlessly.
Although that is an accurate statement, it just doesn't go far or deep enough. In truth, the >> Read More |

| Wild Hogs and Big Dogs - 7/10/2009 |
A very good friend of mine is a Wild Hog and a Big Dog! What I mean by that is that he rides a Harley and he is an accomplished leader. He called me recently and invited me to join him and a few other Wild Hogs on a 3-day bike trip. Regrettably I sold my bike a year ago, but I'm still planning to join them by renting a bike. Honestly, my motivation to do so is not about riding Harley on the open road, although that does appeal to me. I'm more compelled by the fact that these "Wild Hogs" are >> Read More |

| Reverse Mentoring - 7/9/2009 |
Reverse Mentoring is basically allowing someone who is "younger" than you, and most likely from an emerging generation, to teach you something. I experienced it this morning from a "kid" who legitimately believes that an old dude like me can not just make a difference in the world, but have a positive impact!
Honestly, unless I would have been willing to be "teachable" and actually listen to what he was speaking, not "at" me, but "into" me, I would have missed an incredible, God-ordain >> Read More |

| MJ and JC - 7/7/2009 |
I doubt if MJ really knew JC. I heard MJ refer to himself as being like JC, since he believed that JC surrounded himself with children. But I think MJ was missing the point in that respect about JC and was endeavoring to somehow justify his "actions." In my opinion, very little about MJ reminds me of JC! Sure, they both were incredibly popular, they both impacted history, and they both could gather a crowd. But they had vastly different agendas!
MJ seemed to lack a confidence in wh >> Read More |

| Run for Freedom - 7/4/2009 |
Run for Freedom! That's what I did this morning for the very first time, I did the "Run for Freedom"- a 5k race held in beautiful Williamsport, MD. I not only ran the race for the very first time, but it was also my first competitive 5k race ever. I'm proud to say that I set a personal best of 25:02! For an old guy like me that's not too bad. I managed to stay on the heels of an eight minute miler and then pass her with 200 yards to go! Just the competitive side of me!

| Filters - 7/2/2009 |
My son had a house inspection yesterday as part of the process involved in potentially purchasing the house. The inspector was quite thorough, to say the least! As a matter of fact, he gave us quite a lecture on furnace filters. After a while, I came to the conclusion that I really didn't need or want to hear anymore about furnace filters, so I quit listening. You might say, I "filtered" out what he was saying- he was talking, but it wasn't getting through, if you know what I mean.
